Professional Technical Writing
After twenty years of professional technical writing, I’ve realized one thing: I’ve loved my job ever since I started. I remember when I was first hired as a technical writer for an architectural firm that made pre-fabricated homes that would simply be shipped on a train, then loaded onto a flatbed truck and delivered to their destination. It would take only days to build the framework of the house, after which the owner could do whatever they wanted to do on the inside.
My professional technical writing position at the time was writing up the assembly guides and manuals that would help homeowners put together the pre-fabricated homes. It was a very essential job for me to make it as clear and understandable as possible, particularly with the complexity of the job at hand. Imagine having to put together your very own home from scratch!
After my job there, I continued on with professional technical writing as a technical analyst for a manufacturing firm that made consumer products. They were contracted by several large brands and had contracts to build toys and electronic products. At that position I was responsible for the manuals that were included with each of the products we shipped out.
Professional technical writing also brought me to the freelance level when I decided that working in a corporate working environment was not for me. I decided to start my own professional technical writing freelance services business and I experienced even more joy and benefits with my career.
As you can see, professional technical writing brought me to places where I never thought I would ever be. Not only did it give me the opportunity to work with large corporations, but now it has given me a source of income as a freelancer.
